PRACTICAL DEFENSIVE FIGHTING SYSTEM
Practical Defensive Fighting System (P.D.F.S.) is a self-defence method developed by Kai Koskinen. In 2006, 20 years have come to pass since he started practicing aikido, after which he has also practiced many other martial arts. Koskinen developed P.D.F.S., because he wanted to provide first-class self-defence training to people who require it.
Many so-called modern martial arts are somewhat on the wrong track when considering their techniques and training methods:
- The techniques begin from stationary situations
- There are too many techniques and they are too different from each other to support one another
- The techniques do not work against opponents who are larger than you, even though the instructors of the arts claim otherwise
- The arts are said to suit everyone equally, but despite this, everyone should do the techniques the same way
- The freedom to improvise comes too late when considering that people only come to the course to learn self-defence
The Finnish law must be taken into account when defending against an attack, but a mere release from, for example, a wrist grab does not save you. You must do something to the attacker so that you can take control of the situation or disengage from it.
If you do not know what kinds of knives people carry on the streets, where knives can be hidden (e.g. clip-on holsters under the arms, around ankles etc.) or what kind of attacks can be made with them, it is nearly impossible to defend against a knife. Likewise, you should know something about firearms in order to be able to take one away from an attacker’s hand.
True self-defence means observing your surroundings and if you find yourself under attack, it means that you must use unfair and dirty techniques, the sole purpose of which is to save their user.
P.D.F.S. is composed of the following levels: in the first three levels, students learn basic techniques against grabs, punches and kicks. The use of improvised weapons is practiced from early on. All techniques are done at first when standing still, after which they are practiced when in motion. At higher levels, students learn how to improvise and how to apply the previously learned techniques in different situations.
At instructor level graduation exams, the student is put through different situations, which he or she must solve by choosing a proper technique for the situation. After the second student-level, there are two separate levels of training for those who have to resort to use of force in their work.
The techniques have been selected so that they will support each other and can be done while standing still or while moving. The defender will be able to perform the techniques against an opponent who is larger than he/she is.
The objective of P.D.F.S. is to teach students how to apply the learned techniques in situations they might encounter in everyday life.
Welcome to our dojo to practice P.D.F.S.
