biff.gif

Escrima is a martial art that has originated in the Philippines several centuries ago. The word Escrima stands for ‘skirmish’ or ‘fighting’ The art is also known as Kali and Arnis. There is no exact knowledge of the early origin and development of Escrima, but Europeans first came to contact with it in 1521 when the Spanish rule first came to the Philippine Islands. There are over 100 different styles of Escrima, which have been named after for example techniques, opponents, regions or founders.

Escrima is an art that emphasizes the use of weapons, usually sticks and blades, with the secondary focus being on the empty handed techniques. In the times when the art was developed in the Philippine jungles, it was natural that everyone carried a weapon and was ready to use it in combat. Only if a person was completely unarmed - which was rare - he was forced to resort to empty handed techniques.

Sticks are used in practicing Escrima when learning the basic concepts of the art. Practising with weapons makes the arms stronger and more nimble while the movement exercises strengthen the legs. In addition, practising with sticks develops movement skills, co-ordination, reflexes and the sense of rhythm.

Practising Escrima is very useful for anyone who wishes to improve his or her self-defence skills against opponents armed with such weapons as knives or sticks. This art is also very useful for guards or other people working in the security sector who use batons in their work. The stick is used as a tool to learn the basic concepts of Escrima and the techniques can be done with almost any similar object, such as a squash racket or a bicycle pump.

In modern Escrima there is a possibility to participate in competitions even though originally the art was purely used for lethal fighting. There are full contact competitions for people who wish to test their skills against other people.
