BEHAVIOUR IN THE DOJO

1. The student must arrive at the dojo before the class begins. If arriving late, the student performs the initial bows towards the shomen and to the instructor by him/herself, remains seated in seiza and asks the instructor for permission to join the class before rising and joining practice.

2. When entering and leaving the dojo, students bow towards the shomen twice – first while standing and then again while sitting in seiza The meaning of this bow is to show respect towards one’s training partners and towards the dojo.

3. Before and after a practice students perform two bows, the first of which shows respect towards the principles of budo and the second of which shows respect towards the other people at the dojo.

4. A student must keep his or her training clothes tidy and must not wear rings, watches, necklaces or other objects that may cause injury to others during practice.

5. The student must show serious attitude and concentration towards training. Idle conversation, loud laughing and other disturbing behaviour must be avoided.

6. The teacher's instructions must be followed promptly and precisely.

7. In order to maintain proper budo spirit the student must avoid all emotional outbursts. Such feelings and behaviour as anger, contempt and mocking others have no place in the dojo.

8. If a student must leave practice early, he or she must inform the instructor of this and ask for a permission to leave, after which he or she must perform the final bows by him/herself when leaving the dojo.

9. The teacher has the right to remove such people who do not follow these instructions from the dojo A student who uses the skills and techniques taught at the dojo to intentionally harm other people without a clear need to defend him or herself will be banned temporarily from practicing or expelled completely from the dojo.

10. The main goals of practicing budo are: to strengthen one's character and to learn sincerity, perseverance, politeness and self-discipline.
