Basis In combat situtations Hontai Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu combines outer calmness to inner determination and courage. The ideal of the art is to strive for fudoshin, a state of mind which cannot be disturbed by external influences This does not mean that a person gives up his or her emotions, but rather that his or her strength, courage and self-confidence cannot be shaken.
In jujutsu softness and strength complement each other in a natural way. Softness is useful when avoiding or diverting an attack, but after this follows the use of proper kind of strength in order to control and overcome the attacker. The basis of this philosophy lies most of all in the proof of its effectiveness in combat situations.
In order to master jujutsu one requires extensive knowledge of the physical, psychological and emotional aspects of the human being. A jujutsuka is in a way an engineer of the human body who has deep knowledge of its weaknesses, nerve points, joint structure and the way it can be moved. This knowledge of the body is used to take the opponent off balance and to control him, whereas the knowledge of the human mind gives a jujutsuka an opportunity to break the opponent’s spirit.
