Shoji Nishio Sensei 1927-2005
Aikido, meaning “way of harmony with inner energy”, is a modern budo art which was created in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). The main principle of aikido is to never oppose an attacker’s force by force, but rather to divert it and to turn it back upon him.
Ueshiba had many students, of whom one of the best was Shoji Nishio. Nishio had practiced many types of martial arts before starting aikido. He had ranks in: - Kodokan judo 6. dan - Karate 5. dan - Iaido Eishin Ryu 7. dan - Shindo Muso Ryu Jo-jutsu - Araki Ryu Iai-jutsu
In 1951 Shoji Nishio began training aikido due to the order of his karate teacher. Ueshiba made a great impression on Nishio, which is why he decided to remain as Ueshiba’s student. Being a very skillful student, Nishio became an assistant instructor already in 1955. Nishio-sensei received the 8. dan in aikido and has created, for example, the graduation rules of hombu-dojo in Japan.
Nishio-sensei created his own style of aikido which was influenced by the martial arts he practiced before aikido. According to Nishio-sensei, aikido is above all an art of fighting. Unfortunately, not all aikido teachers share this opinion. Many styles of aikido practice mainly techniques against attacks that are not used in real life. In addition, many styles have completely abandoned practicing atemiwaza, which is the art of striking to the weak points of the body. Some aikido teachers go as far as to claim that aikido does not contain any strikes or kicks. This is not in accordance with the teachings of the founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, who has stated that 99% of aikido is atemiwaza. It is nearly impossible to perform a technique to an opponent without using atemi.
Nishio-sensei’s aikido is efficient and versatile. In addition to practicing tachiwaza, or empty-handed techniques, Nishio-sensei’s style uses bokken (wooden sword), jo (staff) and katana (sword) to practice aikido. Aikitoho is a set of sword kata which are performed alone. This enables practicing aikido by oneself for example during holidays or trips.
Welcome to practice real aikido to a real budo club.
